About Woodbury, CT...

The town of Woodbury is located in west central Connecticut. It covers 36.8 square miles and is home to approximately 9,737 residents. Woodbury Connecticut is a charming New England town, complete with its white churches, historical residences, antique shops and a myriad of other businesses.
Woodbury's citizens have a rich heritage. In 1659, citizens of Stratford purchased the "Pomperaug Plantation" from the Pagasset Indians which consisted of land now known as Woodbury, Southbury, Roxbury, Bethlehem and parts of Washington, Middlebury and Oxford. Three families would later settle Woodbury in 1672. The town was quickly incorporated two years later in 1674. It originally included lands now incorporated as the towns of Bethlehem, Roxbury, Southbury, and Washington. The name "Woodbury" means, "dwelling place in the woods."
Today, Woodbury is primarily a residential community, though its principal industries include woodworking, screw machine & welding shops and antique shops. The Voices is the hometown newspaper, which is issued every Wednesday and Saturday. Along with notable shopping and dining, the town of Woodbury has much to offer clubs and organizations, parks and recreation, schools, area services and religious groups. - Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust a 200-acre farm located off Flanders Road and was founded in 1963 by Natalie Van Vleck. Flanders Nature Center offers a Botany Trail, Wildlife Habitat and Wilderness Trail, miles of trails and a pond. Over the years, Flanders has been the recipient of several property donations as well as purchasing property such as the Whittemore Sanctuary (700 acres) in all totaling 1,600 acres throughout Woodbury, Middlebury, Southbury and Bethlehem.

- Hollow Park a wonderful park near the center of Woodbury. It is home to 5 baseball/softball fields and a soccer field. Residents can enjoy a covered pavilion, picnic tables, enclosed pond, and a beautiful walk along the banks of the Pomperaug River. The Parks & Recreation Department, along with the Woodbury Library, offers a summer concert series, Picnic & Pops Night, swimming, carnivals and outdoor movie night.

- Orenaug Park situated on the East side of Main Street, Orenaug Park is well known for its two stone pillars that are located at the entrance to the park. The pillars contain colorful stones from each of the 48 states that comprised the U.S. in 1895, and the stones were all laid by hand by Susan Shove. With the addition of Alaska and Hawaii to the U.S., rocks from each of those states were added to the pillars. There is an observation tower (60 ft. tall) where one can enjoy panoramic views of surrounding towns. There are 11 acres in all, which are great for hiking and walking.

- New Senior Center Woodbury is proud to announce the new Senior Center! Located in Orenaug Meadow (behind town hall at the intersection of Route 317), construction is anticipated to begin in the summer/fall of 2005 with the completion anticipated for December of 2006. The center will be two levels totaling 10,000 square feet with a large room for community meetings. The center will be serviced by the Senior Center Bus.
With an overall ranking of 8th in towns with a population of 6,500 to 10,000 (Connecticut Magazine March 31, 2005 Issue), Woodbury is known for its award-winning education, strong economy and leisure/cultural activities. With all that it has to offer, there is no wonder why Woodbury is known as one of Connecticut's finest towns.
